The Old Steeple Community Church of Aquebogue originally organized in 1758. Their first organ, purchased in 1880, came from the
Earl Organ Factory of Riverhead, NY. That organ, installed and completed by Terry Hudson, served the congregation well until 1946.
The current M.P. Moller pipe organ, dedicated in 1947, uses an electro-pneumatic action. This type of action relies heavily on components comprised of leather. After many years, these components need to be refurbished, cleaned and adjusted. Doing just that would allow the organ to play for many more years, just as it had before. However, the aspects of increased functionality and improved reliability by using new, solid-state components were extremely important to all involved in this rebuilding process.
The church received several bids for this project, and in the end chose our company for the value we provided, our knowledge and honesty, and the glowing recommendations our other customers afforded us. We began this project by removing the internal components from the windchests and refurbishing them at our facility. The reservoirs were removed and re-leathered at our facility as well. We installed a
Peterson solid-state combination action featuring MIDI capability in the console and a new solid-state switching system
just outside the organ chamber. We also rebuilt the original swell shade operators. Once
this work was complete, we tuned the organ to A=440.
The rededication concert took place on Sunday, November 23, 2003. This pipe organ served the congregation well for over fifty years. With its proper restoration and continued regular maintenance, this pipe organ will continue to be a pleasure to listen to and an even greater pleasure to play, with the added benefit of being more reliable than ever before. Old Steeple Community Church of Aquebogue made a sound investment by choosing to have
Elsener Organ Works restore their pipe organ!
